Ampleforth leads assault on GCSE

AMPLEFOFCrH College in Yorkshire announced last week that it had abandoned the GCSE English literature course because pupils found it too easy, and it will be using its own course instead. Just days before, the Headmasters' conference agreed that GCSEs should be abolished because they were an "inadequate preparation" for A-levels.
But the headmaster of one other prominent Catholic public school declared himself "quite happy" with the GCSE. Fr Christopher Jameson of Worth was in full agreement with the deputy headmaster, Fred Belcher, who said that "doing GCSEs hasn't damaged our A-level results". "The GCSEs are different from the '0-levels but with course-work they're quite broadening," he said.
