Church-hunting as a hobby
--By HILARY KNIGHT ---
1\41( column about listening to 'A music will have to wait 'until next week, I'm afraid, because I have received some interesting letters and I want to give you the benefit of them. They concern bobbies.
The first comes frop the fathei of a family in Coventry. It says: " On the subject of hobbies, you may be interested to know that our family hobby is visiting churches. This is not exactly an unusual practice in Catholic families [1 wonder?]
" Finding and visiting churches is a real pursuit. an activity. For instance 1 am constantly surprised to find ' wide-awake ' Catholics [are they?) in this city who don't know that there are ten different parishes and even a convent.
"The hobby involves keeping a
list of places visited. names of church dedications, checking with the Diocesan Directory for names of priests. dates of opening. consecrations. etc
Father, in a recent address. spoke of the marvels of the bee-hive and how the naturalist. the mathematician and the philosopher have to learn from it.
"In the modern school where biology is a must' and botany widely taught. a hobby such as this could he most helpful. 1 wonder if young people nowadays read any of the fascinating books of Henry Pabre ? "
