GLASTONBURY EXPECTS LARGEST CROWD EVER

APERMANENT sanctuary, costing some £2,200. is being erected in the Convent Field. Glastonbury, where Sunday's pilgrimage is expected to be the largest ever in honour of the Martyrs of Glastonbury.
More than £1,700 has already been subscribed towards the sanctuary and the organisers of the pilgrimage. the Knights of St. Columba, hope to raise the balance on Sunday and to he able to hand the building over to the diocese.
Bishop Rudderham of Clifton will celebrate Mass at the new sanctuary before a crowd of thousands who will be praying for the pilgrimage's four aims: 10 honour Our Lady of Glastonbury; to honour the English martyrs, especially those of Glastonbury (BLL Richard Whiting, Roger James and John Thorne); for persecuted Catholics; for the intentions of the Pope, and for the success of the Vatican Council.
Pilgrims will assemble on The Tor, scene of the martyrdom of the Glastonbury martyrs, at 2 p.m. The Bishop will recite the pilgrimage intentions and a sermon will be preached by Bishop Holland, Co-adjutor of Portsmouth. Fourteen crosses, made to the dimensions of the Cross of Calvary, will be carried in procession by diocesan groups of various sodalities and parish organisations, each group led by a chaplain.
As the procession wends its way down to the town and to the convent field, a continuous Rosary will be said by the pilgrims.
More than 60 parishioners of St. Pius X Church, Hartcliffe, near Bristol intend to walk the 22 miles to Glastonbury on Sunday. Led by their parish priest, Fr. Gerald Carroll, they plan to leave at 5 a.m., taking the route over Dundry Hills and thus retracing the footsteps of medieval pilgrims to the shrine.
They hope to attend Mass in Wells before joining the main pilgrimage on the Tor.
For the first time. the statue of Our Lady of Glastonbury will be carried in procession from St, Mary's Church to the convent field by parishioners,
