CATHOLIC SCHOOL DIRECTORY An Invaluable Guide for Parents

From Our Educational Correspondent 11lue1i can be, and has been, written of the strength of Catholic schools in the range of higher education, but the widest survey is given in the Directory of Catholic Schools and Colleges recently issued in its fifth edit ion by Paternoster Publications, Ltd.. at the very low price of one Actually, the directory is not primarily intended to provide a survey of the strength of Catholic higher education, though it succeeds in doing so by the very thoroughness with which it fulfils its object of
providing parents with information upon which they may base their choice of schools for their children.
Wide Range
Forty English Counties and over 260 towns are covered by the information given. There are also details of the schools in Scotland, Northern Ireland and Wales, together with some on the Continent.
These schools range in extent and fees from the famous Public Schools, such as Annpleforth. Oratory and Stonyhurst, down to secondary and preparatory schools, both boarding and day.
Wonderful Opportunities
Within this range of class and fees the Directory shows that Catholics have wonderful opportunities.
Large numbers of the secondary schools are in receipt of Government of local grants which enable them to take children whose parents cannot afford to pay even the lowest of fees, while the public schools have scholarships which lighten the burden for parents.
All Recognised or Approved
As regards the quality of education at these Catholic schools, there can be no question, as all are recognised or approved.
In other words, the pupils at these Catholic schools receive the same general standard of instruction as at non-religious schools, plus the great advantage of training for the world on Catholic principles and morals.
Cardinal Commends
In a foreword Cardinal Hinsley commends the Directory " to all Catholic parents, and not to them only, but to parish priests and all who have to answer enquiries about schools from time to time."
By counties and towns the schools are listed, with information as to the size, age range, whether boarding or day or both and the fees.
With such information before them parents are enabled to make a provisional choice, but in many cases, that choice is made easier by reference to special announcements inserted by the schools, which amplify the details given in the body of the directory.
Not all have co-operated to the
If one has any complaint it is that not every school has co-operated by giving all the information required or by giving parents the additional information possible in the special announcements—but that is probably the fault and the loss of those particular schools.
Taken for what it is, a guide for parents who can pay for the education of their children, the Directory offers them a complete choice of schools and the information on which to make a decision.
