REV. MICHAEL HARTY
PARISH PRIEST OF WAKEFIELD Three months before his silver jubilee, the death has occurred after an operation of the Rev. Michael Marty, parish priest of St. Austin's, Wakefield, for the past ten years.
A native of Co. Kerry, where he was horn in 1896. he studied philosophy at St. Peter's College, Bersden, Glasgow, and was ordained in March, 1919, at St. Joseph's Seminary, Leeds. He was curate at St. Anne's Cathedral, Leeds, for 11 years and parish priest at St. Joseph's, Rawdon, for three years before his appointment to Wakefield.
A former Diocesan Inspector, he had been Diocesan Chaplain of the C.Y.M.S. for 14 years, and Regional Catholic representative on the B,B.C. since 1929. During the past few years he. had founded new churches at Crofton and Crieglestone, growing districts near Wakefield, and recently he had been engaged on ambitious plans for schools development. The news of his untimely death came as a great shock to parishioners and non-Catholics generally.
The Bishop of Leeds (Mgr, H. J. Poskitt) presided at the Solemn Requiem Mass at St. Austen's on Saturday last, and the interment took place at Wakefield.
Nottinghamshire Christian Council, on which Catholics, Anglicans and Free Churchmen are equally represented, 'have referred to the Executive for consideration a suggestion made by the Anglican Bishop of Southwell, Dr. Barry. for making joint representations to city and county boroughs with regard to suitable church sites when reconstruction plans are under consideration. The idea is to prevent competition as regards sites and buildings.
