CHURCH leaders in Japan have condemned the Prime Minister's decision to visit the country's war shrine.
The Catholic bishops' council for justice and peace criticised the visit to the site, which honours Japanese war criminals. They claimed that the visit also defied the Japanese constitution, which has a strict separation of religion and state.
A statement said: "We regret that Prime Minister Koizumi Junichiro visited Yakusuni Shrine in spite of our repeated calls to stop it."
