THE Tyburn Walk will take place this Sunday April 26, and will be led by the Archbishop of Southwark, the Most Reverend Michael Bowen.
It is the 76th Walk and significant because of the 85 martyrs to be beatified later this year in St Peter's Rome, on November 22 by Pope John Paul II.
Fourteen of these martyrs were Tyburn Martyrs two of whom were laymen, three were Franciscans and nine were secular priests.
The first of these martyrdoms took place in 1584 when George Haydock, priest, and William Carter, printer, were executed. The last were in 1643 when the Franciscans, Henry Heath and Arthur Bell met their deaths.
It will be remembered that Pope Paul VI canonised 40 of the English and Welsh martyrs in 1970, nineteen of whom were Tyburn Martyrs.
It is hoped that many people will want to take part in this pilgrimage in honour of these heroic men and women to whom we owe our faith. The Walk leaves the Old Bailey at 3pm, following the via dolorosa of the martyrs from Newgate to Tyburn, where Benediction is given from the balcony of Tyburn Convent at about 5pm.
Afterwards the crypt is open for the pilgrims to venerate the relics of the martyrs.
The Tyburn Walk is in preparation for the Solemnity of the Tyburn Martyrs which will be celebrated at the Tyburn Shrine with a solemn Mass at 6pm on Monday May 4; Fr Adrian Arrowsmith, descendant of the martyr, St Edmund Arrowsmith will be the celebrant and preacher.
