Fight to save jobs
LIVERPOOL'S two leading Churchmen have once again combined in an attempt to prevent further job losses in the city.
Archbishop Derek Worlock and Anglican Bishop David Sheppard last week issued a joint statement expressing concern at plans announced recently by the giant American biscuit combine, Nabisco, to close their Huyton factory.
The bishops much regret the loss of another where nearly one fifth of the population is unemployed, 900 jobs on Merseyside, and have asked Nabisco to give further details of the new jobs which they spoke of providing at the Jacob's factory in Aintree.
As chairman of the Area Manpower Board, Bishop Sheppard has also written on behalf of the board to the Chairman of Nabisco asking for a meeting.
The joint statement comes just two months after Archbishop Worlock and Bishop Sheppard acted to avert the closure of United Biscuits' Crawfords factory in Liverpool.
