Catholic nurses confused

REPORTS that the Catholic Nurses Guild would ignore any strike call from their unions and put the welfare of their patients before union loyalty caused great consternation among Catholic nurses last week.
Miss Mary Ellwood, the president of the CNG, has issued the following statement; "There is among Catholic nurses considerable anxiety about their behaviour if strike action develops at their place of work.
"The members have by a unanimous resolution stated that they would not reduce the standard of care for their patients by taking part in strike action and that they would resist intimidation if this were present.
"The meeting then resolved that the national officers should seek further advice on this matter."
Bishop Philip Harvey, Bishop in North London, who was present at the Guild's annual meeting, stressed the importance of seeking advice and added: "We need to reassure the nurses — we do appreciate their dilemma."
