Sunday, September 25. Sixteenth Sunday after Pentecost.
Monday, September 26. SS. Cyprian and Justina.
SS. Cyprian and Justina were two fourth-century martyrs who won their crown in the persecution under the Emperor Diocletian. On account of their Christianity they were arrested, taken to Nicoll:edits, and there beheaded.. The relics of these two saints are preserved in the baptistery of St. John Lateran, in Rome.
Tuesday, September 27. SS. Cosmas and Damian.
The names of SS. Cosmas and Damian have become familiar to Catholics in Great Britain, since these martyrs, two brothers, with St. Luke, are the titular patrons of the Catholic Medical Guild. A church was dedicated to their honour in Rome, to which city their relics were brought.
Wednesday, September 28. St. Wenceslaus.
Millions have heard that " gond Xing Wenceslaus looked out, on the feast of Stephen." Fewer may know what is historical, that this Bohemian ruler was a tenth century worker for his people's conversion to Christianity. While at prayer in Prague lie was put to death by his unnatural brother. The present year may be the thousandth anniversary, but A.11; 935 is given by some authorities.
Thursday, September 29. Dedication of St. Michael the Archangel.
St. Mieliael, leader of the heavenly Host, is one of three angels venerated in the Church's liturgy, the others being Gabriel and Raphael. In art St. Michael is frequently represented as overcoming a dragon or other monster typifying the forces of evil.
Friday, September 3o. St. Jerome.
The fame of St. Jerome, a Doctor of the Church, rests not only on his sanctity but also on a scholarship which produced, as its greatest fruit, the Vulgate of Holy
Scripture, to this day the principal authority on the genuine text. St. Jerome's relics are in Rome, in the basilica of St. Mary Major.
Saturday, October x. St. Remigius.
Today's saint, also known as St. Remy, was an Archbishop of Rheims who governed that diocese during a great part of the sixth-seventh century, his episcopal rule lasting upwards of seventy years. He was one of the most learned men of his time, and is regarded as among the greatest glories of the Church in France.
