SPECIAL MESSAGE FROM THE POPE
National Press Boycott FORTY-FIVE THOUSAND MEN MARCHED IN SILENT PROCESSION LAST SUNDAY FROM SOUTHWARK CATHEDRAL TO WESTMINSTER, LED BY A YOUNG MAN BEARING A WOODEN CRUCIFIX.
London police officials said that they had never before seen so orderly a demonstration.
The procession, organised by Cardinal Hinsley, was in reparation to God for the insults that are being uttered daily against His Name and His Sacred Person, but, as Cardinal Hinsley explained: "My intention was not to organise a combative demonstration, but to urge prayers for peace."
There was only sufficient space in Westminster Cathedral precincts for twenty thousand of the marchers. Here they sang hymns, and receiving Benediction heard that the Pope had sent a message and his blessing for the marchers.
On the following day newspapers were searched for reports of the procession, but few of them had considered it worth more space than a few paragraphs.
