Praise for organisers of Congresses onVirgin Mary

From a Special Correspondent in Rome
Speaking to participants in the twin Marian and Mariological Congresses which have just ended in Rome, Pope Paul last week linked the example of the Virgin Mary as incarnating the true values of the human spirit with the advancement or women.
Pope Paul gave special emphasis to the role of Mary, the Mother of God, in the life of the Church by driving from his Vatican apartments to the Antonianum Hall, near St John in Lateran, where the congresses were held successively.
The Pope paid tribute to the organisers of the Mariological Congress and the fourteenth Marian Congress — Cardinal Suenens, Archbishop of Malines Brussels and Fr Carol Balk, OFM, President of the Pontifical International Marian Academy. He blended the themes of the two congresses in his talk, saying: "Moreover, the themes chosen by these two congresses merit particular consideration and praise on our part.
"The first, the Mariological Congress, is concerned with devotion to the Blessed Virgin from the 12th to the 15th centuries; the other, the Marian Congress, is concerned with the Holy Spirit and the Blessed Virgin. It would be difficult to think of more opportune and interesting themes."
He told members attending the congresses; "You can easily understand the great importance which we attribute to the Iwo congresses now being celebrated. They will surely be a .seed which will bring forth abundant and salutary fruits ... in the theological, liturgical, ecumenical and above all the pastoral field."
One way to re-present Mary in an adequate way to the People of God was the path of truth, first of all — biblical historical and theological speculation — which concerned Mary's exact place in the Mystery of Christ and the Church. This was the path of the learned — "the one you are following ..."
The Pope concluded: "While, in our day, woman is advancing in the life of society, there is nothing more beneficial or elevating than the example of this Virgin Mother, radiant with the Holy Spirit, who with her beauty sums up and incarnates the true values of the human spirit."
Anglicans oppose exorcism
A group of leading Church of England theologians and academics has urged the Archbishops of Canterbury and York and meinbers of the General Synod to make sure that exorcism "receives no official encouragement and gains no official status in the Church."
The churchmen admit that on the evidence of the Synoptic Gospels Jesus performed exorcism, but add: "... The Church has never expected that her members must necessarily share all Jesus' beliefs."
In contrast, the Archbishop of Canterbury, Dr Coggan, has, in recent weeks, openly defended exorcism — provided strict conditions are observed. He has pointed out that the Church was instructed in the Gospels to continue Christ's work of releasing men from the powers of evil.
