Making the Bible relevant today

by SISTER LORETTO
The Bible Speaks ht R. Davidson (St Andress Press. paperback £1.20) Saints for Sinners by Alban Goodies (Shccd & Ward, paperback £1.30) God is not forgotten or dead, since the public has asked for a reprint of a book, first published in 1959, which helps them to understand the eternal message in the Bible. Scientists have not yet convinced the world that the Bible is a myth.
Davidson deals with such semis as anthropomorphic, cosmologies, the Decalogue, etymology, logos, etc. so that young people can understand what it's all about.
The quotations are apt and the printed form makes them all the more enjoyable to peruse the "drama of God and man on the stage of human history". The fossilised characters of pre-historic times have come to life, and one feels they are part of human destiny. God Himself being the master player. The book is highly recommended for its convincing, reliable, and enjoyable method of elucidating the real Bible and making it relevant to the modern world.
One wonders if men are more sinful and more repentant than women. for the ladies have no choice in Saints for Sinners. They have only St Margaret of Cortona from whom they can look for inspiration, amidst a galaxy of saintly men.
Or is it that the women are more shy with their virtue, because you can't think of St Augustine without his mother St Monica, Blessed Claud without St Margaret Mary, St Benedict Joseph Labre apart from both his parents.
Which of these saints is the greatest? Well, they arc all so diverse that a choice would depend on the mentality and temperament of the reader. One's position and status would he another factor. A beggar would naturally choose St Benedict Joseph Labre; a repentant profligate would look up to St Augustine for inspiration.
Archbishop Goodies is well known for his religious classics. Ile was one of the earliest writers to make Christ, a warm, lovable person in his "Gospel Stories," which brightened the religious classes for thousands of students.
