Cardinal boosts St George's

THE ARCHBESHOP of Westminster has paid a morale-boosting visit to St George's school in Maida Vale, London, where headmaster Philip Lawrence was stabbed to death by a pupil in 1995. as the school looks to its future, writes Tracy-Jo Smith.
Cardinal Cormac MurphyO'Connor told pupils that much had been done to improve the ethos and the character of the school.
He said "The Catholic Church in London is the sign of ethnic diversity that exists. I enjoyed meeting the headteacher and staff. There seem to be challenges which face this school and I hope that in the next five years that it will continue to get the support it needs from the diocese.
"It seems to be back on an even keel; stability has been restored and should develop along these lines."
Headmistress Lady Stubbs, who helped to bring the school off special measures welcomed the Cardinal's visit.
"It is nice for the pupils to see the Cardinal in his official regalia, to feel that someone of his standing has taken the time and trouble to see us," she said.
"This year has been very traumatic. I am proud that we've been able to have the special measures removed."
Lady Stubbs leaves the school later this year when a new headteacher will take up the reins.
