Fr Curran goes back to class

FR CHARLES Curran, a moral theologian declared by the Vatican in 1986 to be unsuitable to teach Catholic theology, has accepted a teaching position at the University of Southern California's School of Religion for the coming academic year.
Fr Curran, who taught at the Catholic University of America in Washington for more than 20 years, will take courses at the private university in Los Angeles on human values and social ethics as a visiting professor. This is the same position he held at Cornell University in Ithaca, New York, for 1987-8. The Vatican's 1986 announcement was made in view of Fr Curran's well-known disagreement with some Church teaching, and led to his suspension by the Catholic University until certain questions about his status were resolved.
Although the Catholic University has now offered Fr Curran a position in a department which is not dependent on Vatican approval, Fr Curran is persisting in suing the university for breach of contract and violations of academic freedom.
