Bishop Crowley installed
by Murray White
BISHOP John Crowley was officially installed as the sixth bishop of Middlesbrough this week, promising that his episcopate would be "characterised by a partnership" between himself, his priests and people.
Picking his favourite passage of scripture "Choose life" from the book of Deuteronomy to be his new motto, Bishop Crowley was installed by Archbishop Derek Worlock of Liverpool. The archbishop received spontaneous applause for what was the first engagement outside his diocese since his illness last year.
Bishop Crowley, in a brief speech during the service, attended by more than 30 bishops, stressed that the laity must play a full part in the life of Middlesbrough. "if the diocese is to move forward".
Cardinal Basil Hume, who also attended the installation at St Mary's Cathedral, Coulby Newham, on Monday, paid a warm tribute to his friend and former assistant bishop in Westminster.
The Cardinal expressed his "sadness at losing an excellent auxiliary bishop, and yet joy that a diocese in which I spent the greater part of my life, has been given such a worthy successor to Bishop Harris".
Bishop Crowley was private secretary to Cardinal Hume between 1976 and 1982.
