AIDS video warning
A WORKING party of the Catholic bishops' conference has expressed "serious reservations" about an AIDS educational video being distributed by the Department of Education to schools. However, the church group falls short of' demanding a ban on the video, and suggests rather that parents and governors be consulted about certain sections of the video course.
The working party detailed as worrying parts of the course which dealt in explicit detail with the use of the condom which were not accompanied by any "adequate warning that such a method does not give complete protection" from AIDS. Nor is there any discussion of morality, they report. In dealing with sexual relationships, the video advises fidelity to a single partner without any mention of the sacrament of marriage. "Accordingly, the exhortation to be faithful to a single sexual partner, while appropriate to those about to marry, may be quite misplaced and, in fact, counter productive in its effects when directed towards young teenagers as the criterion for present behaviour", the church group report.
In considering the video, parents and governors should also look at the alternatives provided by the Catholic Marriage Advisory Council, and booklets by various church organisations, the party contends.
