Newman canonised' by the universities

TH E fame of Cardinal Newman is steadily on the increase, said Fr. Herbert Keldany. national chaplain to university graduates, in a sermon at the opening of a conference held in Nottingham last weekend by the University Catholic Federation.
Before a congregation of students and graduates which largely filled the nave of St. Barnabas' Cathedral, Fr. Keldany claimed that the great leader of the Oxford Movement has been virtually canonised by acclamation in the universities of the world, so no other academic figure has attained such a universal veneration.
Among the authorities who addres'sed the conference were the present head of the Oratory at Birmingham, Fr. Stephen Dessain, who read a paper on the signifi cance of Newman today.
He was followed by a young graduate from Durham and Oxford, who is at present attached to Bristol University, Mr. Terence Kenny. He drew on his forthcoming book. "Newman and Politics." for his optical view of the social ideas of the Cardinal.
On Sunday Mgr. H. Francis Davis, vice-rector of Oscott College, discussed the contribution Cardinal Newman made to an understanding of the Church, and pointed out the fact that "The Development of Doctrine " was written many years before Darwin published the "Origin of the Species"
Bishop Ellis received the delegates after Benediction on Sunday and was interested to hear that Mee girls had hitch-hiked from Newcastle to attend the conference.
