THE BELGIAN CONGO: some recent changes, by Ruth Slade (Oxford University Press for the Institute of Race Relations, 5s.).
WHAT will happen in the Belgian Congo when this vast territory gains its independence on June 30 this year? In this booklet, written before the recent constitutional conference, Dr. Slade (a member of the Africa committee of the Sword of the Spirit) wisely does not attempt to answer this question but gives instead the foundation on which any prophecy must be based: a balanced and concise summary of Belgian policy and the post-war change from paternalism to preparation for independence.
