BARROW IN FURNESS Over 500 people attended a highly successful entertainment and dance held i aid of the funds for the Church of the Sacred Heart, Barrow in Furness on Wednesday, October 12.
The Rev. T. Gore, parish priest, after a tribute to the efforts of his predecessor who had reduced the debt by £5,000, said that if present efforts were continued the whole should soon be cleared off.
LEEDS Over 300 persons attended a whist drive and dance at the Workmen's Institute, Crossgates, Leeds, promoted by the C.O.M. in aid of the building fund of the proposed new church of St. Teresa. This was the first public function in aid of the fund and other societies in the parish are hoping for similar success with their efforts for the same cause.
HUDDERSFIELD As a result of the town's new housing schemes, which have taken large numbers of Catholics into the estates at Cherry Road and Abbey Nook, a new parish, carved out of St. Patrick's, to which many of the people formerly belonged, has been erected, and the Rev. P. J. Russell, curate at St. Patrick's, has been appointed the first parish priest.
The new parish is to he dedicated to Our Lady of Lourdes. Mass is said at present in the school room of the Anglican Woodhouse Church School.
GATESHEAD A very successful sale of work was recently held in aid of the fund to reduce the debt on the Church of Corpus Christi, Gateshead. The sale lasted three days and was organised by the Women's Confraternity. The parish priest is the Rev. N. Brown.
WIGAN £18 odd was raised recently by a whist drive for the Boys' Training Farm at Prior's Park, Parbold. The Southport Catholic Land Association organised the event. The Rev. G. Buisscret is in charge of the boys on the farm. The venture was started in great poverty in December, 1934.
DUNDEE
On Saturday, October 15. Mgr. Toner, Abbot, C.R.P., laid the foundation stone of the first of the two new Catholic churches which are to be built in Dundee. The church is to be dedicated to St. Teresa of Avila, and will accommodate 400. It is situated in Graham's Street, and will be a chapel of ease to the parish of St. Mary's.
WOODHALL SPA The Church of Our Lady and St. Peter, Woodhall Spa, Lincolnshire, is to have a new porch and a complete electric heating plant installed. The cost is to be defrayed by a benefactor who wishes to remain anonymous.
BATH
The beautiful church of St. John the Baptist, on the South Parade, Bath, which was consecrated as long ago as 1863, on Sunday last celebrated the seventy-fifth anniversary of its consecration. The mission was originally in the care of the Benedictines at Downside Abbey, and was handed over to the diocese of Clifton in 1932.
FA I RLIGHT
At a meeting of the Battle Rural District it was revealed that the Southwark Diocesan Authorities have applied for permission to erect a church and presbytery at Fairlight Cove. The site has already
been acquired. The matter was favourably received.
BOSCOMBE
With the assistance of one of his parishioners, Fr. George Turner, S.J., of Corpus Christi Church, Boscombe, Hants, has recently completed a shrine to St. Teresa of Lisieux. It is carved in Austrian oak and has taken a year to finish.
NEWCASTLE
On Saturday last a sale of work in the English Martyrs' Church, Cowgate, New castle, was opened by the prominent local Catholic Sheriff, Councillor J. E. Scanlan, to raise the money to pay off the debt on the parish hall. The debt amounts to £770, but the Rev. 3. Marshall announced that he was confident that he would soon be able to say that it had been paid in full.
A four-days' bazaar in aid of the Retreat House of the Convent of Marie Reparatrice, Osborne Road, was opened on Wednesday, October 19, by Mgr. J. McCormack, Bishop of Hexham and Newcastle, in the Old Assembly Rooms, Newcastle. Many parishes in the district have sent contributions.
LOSTOCK
The Mayor of Stretford and other civic dignitaries were present when Mgr. Mar
shall, Vicar Capitular of the diocese of Sal ford, opened ths church hall which is to serve as chapel to the new parish of St.
Hugh of Lincoln. The hall seats four hundred, and the foundation stone was laid by the late Mgr. Henshaw on June 4 last. The Rev. M. Faulkner is parish priest.
WALSINGHA It/
Fr. Herbert, 0.F.M., Superior at Greyfriars, Walsingham, is reported as saying that the church which it is proposed to
build on the plot of ground adjoining the Black Lic Hotel, is to be commenced before the end of the year or early in January of next year. The church is to be known as the Pilgrims Church and is to be 190 feet long.
BRIDLINGTON
The Deputy Mayoress of Bridlington, Mrs. A. E. Wilkinson, opened the annual bazaar at the Lounge, Bridlington, in aid of the Catholic Chu eh debt funds, on Thursday of last week. The event was very successful.
HA VERHILL
A small chapel was opened on Sunday, October 9, at Haverhill, near Newmarket, dedicated to the two East Anglian saints, SS. Felix and Edmund.
HOUNSLOW
The Church of St. Michael the Archangel and St. Martin of Tours was solemnly dedicated on Wednesday, October 12, by Mgr. Myers deputising for Cardinal Hinsley. The old church was opened in 1884 and the new church 1929. The parish priest is the Rev. Wilfrid F. Musgrave:
