POPE JOHN Paul II celebrated his 84th birthday on Wednesday this week. The Pontiff marked the occasion with a cake baked by his cook, Sr Germana, writes Freddy Gray.
Vatican officials said that the Pope’s perfect birthday present would be a visit to Bern, the capital of Switzerland, at the begin ning of June, when he is supposed to meet thousands of young Catholics.
Observers have been impressed in recent months by the Pope’s displays of good health, despite his old age, He recently became the third-longest serving pontiff of all time, having led the Church for more than 25 years.
