TWO' STONES LAID AT BERMONDSEY

AFTER Bishop Cow deroy of
Southwark laid the foundation stone of the new Church of the Most Holy Trinity at Dockhcad. Bermondsey, London, on Sunday, there was a procession to the nearby Convent of Mercy, where building is also under way.
There, the Bishop laid a second foundation stone.
Both the church and the convent were destroyed during the blitz. Sunday was the 122nd anniversary of the opening of the old church.
Three priests were killed during the bombing, but one survived: Canon Edmund Arbuthnott, now Secretary of the diocesan Rescue Society. He was present at the ceremony on Sunday, together with many other priests who have served the parish in the past.
Also present were the parish priest, Canon Owen McManus, the Mayor of Bermondsey, Councillor Tom Hendy and Mr. R. J. Mellish, M.P. for Bermondsey. Both Mr. Hendy and Mr. Mellish are Catholics.
