Pope's pledge on unity to new Orthodox leader

IN a message of goodwill to -1 the new Orthodox Patriarch, Dimitrios, Metropolitan of Imros, an Aegean island off the Turkish coast. Pope Paul promised on Monday to continue to work for unity between the Roman Catholic and Eastern Orthodox Churches.
The Pope, who was represented on Tuesday at
Patriarch Dimitrios's enthronement in Istanbul, said in his message: "In the Bishop of kome the Orthodox Church will always find a loving brother desirous of continuing to progress towards the day, so greatly desired by your great
predecessor, Patriarch Athenagoras, when our fully re-found unity will be sealed."
Patriarch Dimitrios, 58, succeeds Patriarch Athenagoras. 86, who died in an Istanbul hospital early this month. The Turkish Government has formally recognised his election.
