Neston
The Church of St. Winefride, Neston, Cheshire, which is to be consecrated by Mgr. Moriarty, Bishop of Shrewsbury, on August. 3, will be the third church to be consecrated this year in the Shrewsbury diocese. The church was built in 1843.
Seacombe, Wallasey
On Friday next, July 28, the Church of Our Lady and St. Joseph, Seacombe, Wallasey, celebrates the golden jubilee of its opening in 1889. Mgr. Moriarty, Bishop of Shrewsbury, will pontificate in the church on the following Sunday, July 30, and will preach in the evening. When the church was first opened in 1889 the late Mgr. Singleton, Bishop of Shrewsbury, INAS the parish priest of the church, where he remained until he was consecrated Bishop of the diocese by the late Cardinal Bourne ill the same church.
Sittingbourne, Kent
Lady Maitland, wife of Sir Adam Maitland, M.P., opened recently a fête organised by the parishioners of the Church of the Sacred Heart, Sittingbourne, Kent, and held in the grounds of the Convent of the Nativity. Fr. F. Paul Baker, 0.Carrn, parish priest of Sittingbourne, said that this was the eleventh year in succession that a member of Sir Adam Maitland's family had opened the Carmel Fête. The parish of Sittingbourne is in the hands of the Calced Carmelites.
Weston-super-Mare
A successful two-day garden fete was held last week in the grounds of the Corpus Christ i school, Weston-superMare, in aid of the parish funds. Mgr. Canon Lyons, V.G., parish priest, who presided, thanked the members of the Catholic Women's League, St. Vincent de Paul Society and the Scouts for their help in organising the fête.
Whitley, Reading
It is announced by the Rev. R. E. Scantlebury, parish priest of St. James', Reading, that the building fund of the new church at Whitley has now exceeded £2,000, the exact figure being 12,048. A donation of £5 has been received from a priest in America, the brother of a young Irish girl who was greatly helped by two parishioners of Whitley when she was once ill in Reading.
Letchworth
Lord Sempill. the famous aviator, flew from Copenhagen recently to open a fete in the grounds of the Convent of Our Lady of Peace, Roxley Court, Willian, which was held in aid of the building fund of the new church at Letchworth.
Minster, Isle of Thanet
An " Old Time Fayre " was held recently in the gardens of Minster Abbey, near Ramsgate, one of the oldest houses in England, now an Abbey of Benedictine nuns. The fair, which was opened by the Right Rev. Dom Adrian Taylor, 0.S.B., Lord Abbot of Ramsgate, was in aid of a fund for the repair of the Abbey roof.
Little Common, Bexhill
Work has begun on the building of the new Church of St. Thomas More, Little Common, near Bexhill. The new church, which is built according to a modern adaptation of romanesque style, will cost £7,000, and will accommodate about 400 people.
Kettering
The foundation stone of the new Church of St. Edward, Kettering, is to be laid on Thursday next, July 27. This was revealed by the Rev. W. H. Hunt ing, parish priest, when he introduced Baroness Vaux of Harrowden. Harrowden Hail, near Kettering, who performed the opening ceremony of the sale of work held by the Children of Mary in the grounds of the Ursuline Convent, Kettering, in aid of the church building fund.
Doncaster
A piece of land next to the Church of St. Peter, Doncaster, has been bought at a cost of £850. The Rev. C. P. Flynn, parish priest of St. Peter's, hopes eventually to build a parochial hall on this plot as soon as the present work on the extension of the senior school shall be ended.
Leicester
Countess Armand, of Skeffington Hall, opened yesterday, Thursday, July 20, the Goodwood Fair in aid of the decoration and improvement of the Chapel of St. Joseph, which is a chapelof-ease for the, Church of the Sacred Heart, Leicester. The fair will be continued to-morrow, Saturday, July 22. The Chapel of St. Joseph was originally a stable, and was converted to its present use as a chapel by voluntary labour.
Luton
The need of a third church in Luton was mentioned by the Rev. G. E. Dalby, parish priest of the Church of Our Lady Help of Christians, Luton, when he introduced Mrs Herewyt de Bless, a sister of a former Luton priest, who opened the annual bazaar and fête in the church grounds. " Since her visits here," said Fr. Dalby, " this church has been built, another parish has been opened, and it is just about time we had a third church."
Coxlodge
A new parish has been formed in the diocese of Hexham and Newcastle by cutting off CoxIodge from the present
parish of St. Charles, Gosforth. The Rev, John Magin, assistant treasurer at Bishop's House, Tynemouth, has been appointed the first parish priest of the new parish. Originally the parish of Gosforth was founded from Coxlodge, and the two together formed one parish; now Coxlodge is to regain its independence.
Cockfosters, London
The Very Rev. Prov. Sup. Dom Constantine, M.O.S.B., Prior at Cockfosters, opened a successful garden party last Saturday, held in the Benedictine Convent grounds in aid of the church building fund. In his opening address he praised the enthusiastic efforts of the parishioners, especially of that section of Catholic Action which was responsible for the organisation of the fete. The proceeds were in aid of the church building fund.
