SEMINARIES OPENED IN POLAND?
SIR,--111 your issue or December 13, Mr. Donald M. O'Connor questions my statement that Harts Frank, the German Governor of Poland, recently opened two new Catholic seminaries in that country. I got this information from the New York Times, a very well informed and very antiNazi paper, which certainly would not have published it if it were untrue.
Owing to the fact that America, as a neutral, maintains correspondents in many parts of the European Continent which are closed to British journalists. the American Press gets much news directly from those parts, whereas the English Press does not. It does not necessarily follow, however, that this American news is unduly favourable to the Germans; on the contrary, it is sometimes so hostile that a number of New York correspondents have been expelled. When, therefore, those correspondents report some slight good that the Germans have done, I am always inclined to believe them, and to think that they did right in so reporting. I am convinced that Hans Frank acted from political and not religious motives, and that he does not therefore deserve the thanks of Catholic Poland any more than Pitt deserved the thanks of Catholic Ireland when, in the year 1795, he established at the expense of the British Government the great Catholic college of Maynooth with the object of winning over the Irish Catholic hierarchy and priests to the side of England, then engaged in a life-and-death struggle with revolutionary France, of making the Irish sogart an English spy on his own flock, and the Irish Bishop a toady who owed his appointment to Dublin Castle.
FRANCIS MCCULLAGH,
New York.
