WHAT a pity that Martin Newland (August 14) spoils his otherwise excellent report on the forthcoming Vatican statement on dissent by referring to what the Pope calls "the Word of God, authentically interpreted by the Church's magisterium" as merely the "official line."
If Fr Curran, or Fr Haring for that matter, dissented from only the "official line" there would be no problem. But the issue that the. new statement will address itself to is indeed a serious one: how far can one dissent from what the Pope teaches to be the Word of God and remain a Catholic?
