Rich and poor

THE gap between rich and poor households in Britain has widened between 1975 and 1985 according to government figures announced this week. The top 20 per cent of homes accounted for 40 per cent of incomes in 1985, a rise of two per cent on 1975, while the share of the bottom 20 per cent fell from 7.1 to 6.7 per cent.
Assisi animals
IN autumn the World Wildlife Fund and the International Consultancy on Religion, Education and Culture, with the Dean and Chapter of Westminster, are organising a series of events culminating in a Harvest Festival Service to be held in Winchester Cathedral on October 4. These events are designed to further the alliance between conservation and religion established at WWF's multi-faith celebrations held in Assisi last year.
Genocide history
THE Spiro Institute for the Study of Jewish History and Culture is to hold a conference in September on the subject of "genocide and survival". The conference will attempt to develop understanding of the cause and effects of genocide, and explore aspects of survival, both individual and collective.
Katyn memorial
THE Katyn Memorial in Gunnersbury Cemetery, Hounslow, Middlesex will be the venue on September 19 for a tribute to the 15,000 Polish prisoners of war murdered in 1940 by the Soviet secret police. MFs and members of international organisations are expected to attend the event which will start at llam.
Bless the bride
TWO members of the clergy will marry later this month. The bride will be the Church of Scotland minister Rev Catherine Taylor and the groom will be a Church of England curate, Brian Owen. Miss Taylor's Church of Scotland brother-inlaw will be conducting the service with an Anglican priest, Rev George Lings assisting.
On yer bike

Priest in jail
Fr Peter Keeling, Chairman of the Middlesbrough Justice and Peace Group, was jailed earlier this week for refusing to pay a fine following his part in the Ash Wednesday peace protest. He will spend five days in all in jail for refusing to pay E20 in fines, £10 in costs and £1.91 in compensation.
Pro-women Warden
REV Martin Reynolds, a member of the Movement for the Ordination for Women in the Anglican church, has appealed to the bishops of the church in Wales asking them to install a new Warden for St Michael's Theological College, Llandaff who would be favourable to the opening up of the college to prospective women priests.
