VATICAN LINK WITH TITO RESTORED

FROM A ROME CORRESPONDENT
THE VATICAN and Yugoslavia announced on Friday that they were resuming full diplomatic relations after an 18-year break, and would exchange envoys at the ambassador level.
The decision makes Yugoslavia the first Communist regime in East Europe to resume official links with the Vatican.
The announcement followed months of secret negotiations between the two governments, which have maintained quasidiplomatic ties since 1966. Both the Vatican and Belgrade had been keeping in touch through "special envoys" with no diplomatic standing.
Vatican sources said the Vatican's present special envoy, Archbishop Mario Cagna. 58, would become Pro Nuncio —the title the Vatican gives to ambassadors in countries where they were not recognised as deans of the Diplomatic Corps.
The Yt.tgoslav Ambassador, the sources said. would be Vjekoslav Cyrije, his Government's unofficial envoy for the past four years.
The two governments maintained full relations until 1952 when Pope Pius XII named imprisoned Archbishop Alois Stepinac a cardinal. Belgrade broke off relations in reply. Cardinal Stepinac, jailed for alleged war crimes, died in 1960.

`Poland in danger'
PERSONAL sacrifices were
needed if Poland was to survive, said Cardinal Wyszynski, the Primate, preaching on Sunday in Warsaw on the 50th anniversary of the battle in which Polish forces stopped the Red Army at the gates of Warsaw.
Preaching in a church associated with that battle, the Mother of God Victorious, he referred to "the example of the great Poles." He said that if the nation "cut itself off from its connections with its history the tragedy of the nation will only then begin."
