12,000 Poles remember a 'Miracle'

"rrHE Miracle of the Vistula" -L on the Feast of Our Lady's Assumption 33 years ago-when the Russian Army, marching on Warsaw, was utterly defeated by the Poles was solemnly celebrated during last week-end in many centres of Polish emigration.
Six thousand Poles gathered on Saturday in the Albert Hall, London, with M. August Zaleski, President of the Republic, and members of the Polish Government in exile.
General McCreery was among the British guests who spoke, praising the exploits of the Polish soldiers during the second World War.
General Anders recalled that in August. 1920, when the Bolsheviks were marching on Warsaw, they already had a prefabricated "government" for Poland.
Two hundred buses from all over the Midlands. Gloucestershire and up to Sheffield and Nottingham took some 6,000 Poles on Sunday to the grotto of Our Lady of Lourdes at Hednesford, Staffs.
They were on pilgrimage as previously they went to Czestochowa, Pickar and Kalwarii.
Two-hour service
It began with confessions heard by eight Polish priests. Then High Mass was sung outside the church, to the accompaniment of Polish hymns, by Mgr. Stan iszewsk Vicar Delegate for the Poles in Britain, who also preached. urging all present to pray for thc Church in Poland.
Mass was followed by a procession of the Blessed Sacrament to the grotto, at which the Litany of Loreto was sung, The pilgrims returned to the open air altar in procession round the church, and Benediction was given, the whole service lasting a full two hours.
'1 he victory on the Vistula was celebrated by Birmingham Poles on Saturday when an address was given by General Rysoskey, Commander of the Polish Air Force.
People are too content to be directed
Hundreds of people from 11 Welsh counties took part in the annual pilgrimage on Sunday to St. Winifridc's Well, Holywell.
Bishop Petit of Menevia, addressing the pilgrims. said that the mart-inthe-street finds it difficult to understand the social and international problems that face him today because these things are "matters for the expert."
People are quite content to go on being directed in what to think and to say, and 'even how to act in the dav-to-day problems that affect their lives. It is a curious state of mentality.
All those problems, the Bishop said, can be solved by one thinga proper fashioning of family life.
Cardinal injured
The Primate of Cuba, Cardinal Arteaga, is in a Havana hospital recovering from a head injury sustained in an accident at his home. His condition is not critical.
