the Catechism of the Catholic Church has become an instant best-seller in the United States, with 50,000 paperback copies sold within the first 10 days of publication.
Officials at the US Conference of Catholic Bishops have revealed that the first print-run of the paperback edition was almost immediately sold out, according to Catholic World News.
The bishops now estimate overall sales for the first year of publication at well over 100,000.
At the April 7 opening of the annual Religious Education Congress in Los Angeles, 1,500 copies of the Compendium were sold immediately, with Cardinal Roger Mahony saying that all high-school teachers and students should have the book.
The Compendium was prepared, at the request of Pope John Paul H. by a commission headed by then-Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger. The purpose of the volume is to provide an accurate and authoritative but condensed version of the full Catechism of the Catholic Church. The Compendium summarises the full Catechism in a 200-page volume.
