40 envoys protest to the Pope
THE entire Diplomatic Corps accredited to the Holy See— envoys of some 40 nations—this week asked for an audience of the Pope to present a protest against the banishment of Cardinal Wyszynski, Primate of
Poland.
They were due to be received by His Holiness yesterday (Thursday) and it was expected that the Holy Father would give an imr-utant address. A number of Governments and Heads of States have on various occasions protested against persecution, but this joint request by the whole of the Diploma tic Corps accredited to the Holy See, publicly announced, is unprecedented. It was also announced on Wednesday that the Australian Acting High Commissioner in London has been instructed to lodge a protest with the Polish Government against the persecution in Poland.
The Australian Prime Minister, Mr. Menzies, made the announcement to the House of Representatives in Canberra. All Australia, Mr. Menzies said, is indignant at this persecution.
The Australian delegation to the United Nations. he added. have been instructed to seek an opportunity to express Australia's abhorrence.
