Guyana Jesuit stabbed

An English Jesuit priest died after being stabbed during a demonstration in Georgetown, the capital of Guyana. Fr Bernard Darke, 54, was stabbed in the hack while taking photographs for the Catholic Standard, the Guyanese antigovernment weekly newspaper.
The paper's editor, Mr Mike James, and his wife were also injured in the clashes. The attack has been linked with a controversial sect called the House of Israel and its ex-convict leader known as Rabbi Washington.
Fr Darke worked on the Jesuit misssions in Guyana for 19 years. His newspaper has been prominent in human rights issues in the country and the demonstration he was photographing was a peaceful protest against the arrest of some university lecturers.
Fr Darke was taken to the government hospital and then to the Mercy Hospital, where he died. His body has been removed by the police for postmortem culmination and it is understood that suspects are being questioned.
