U.S. is furthering Newman's Cause

"IF in addition to St. Augustine and St. Thomas Aquinas, .L our age needs an intellectual giant who was at the core a saint, it is the humble English convert of 1845".
These words, concerning the furthering of the cause for the beatification of Cardinal Newman, were written not in England-but by Bishop Hallinan of Charleston, South Carolina, U.S.A., in a letter to
Fr. John Greene, of The Oratory, Rock Hill, who has just been appointed secretary of a new secretariat for the Cause which has been established in the diocese.
A grant of $5,000 has recently been made to the Cause by the American Catholic weekly, " Our Sunday Visitor", on the recommendation of Bishop Pursley of Fort Wayne.
The first use to he made of the money is the establishment of the secretariat to help collect and forward appropriate evidence to Rome, to deal with correspondence, and in general help the VicePostulator (Mgr. H. Francis Davis
of Bearwood. Birmingham) and the Historical Commission in the furtherance of the Cause
Fr. Greene who is himself an Oratorian arrived in Birmingham this week to stay at the Oratorian House for a couple of months.

Over 2,01X1 attended the Requiem on Tuesday of Fr. Hugh Callaly, laM.1., of Sacred Heart church. Kilburn, N.W. London, who died last Friday aged 53. He had served at Kilburn since 1953. Educated at St. Malachy's College, Belfast, and Beicamp College. Dublin. he studied at the Gregorian University, Rome. and was ordained In 1933. He taught at the Oblate Scholagtieate 1934-37. then went to St. Anne's. Rocks Ferry. Cheshire. He was rector of the Church of the English Martyrs, Tower Hill. Iondon, from the beginning of the war until 1947 when he became rector of Wetherby, York.
Sister Dorothy Thorold Sister Dorothy Thorold. in religion Sister Magdalene, Sister of Charity, died on Sunday at Mill Hill. Born in 1872, she was the eldest daughter of Dr. A. W. Thorold, Bishop. successively of Rochester and Winchester. and of Emily Labouchere. sister of the Rt. Hon. Henry Labouchere. P.C., M.P. She became a Sister fifty years ago last December. As a Seam of Charity, she devoted her energies to the care of children.
