HIERARCHY AGAIN FOR ETHIOPIA

Bishop to be consecrated in Rome
WITH the episcopal consecration in Route on May 1 of Mgr. Haile Maryam Cahsay, the holy See will begin the reconstruction of the Hierarchy in Ethiopia.
Mgr. Cahsay, an Ethiopian, has been appointed titular Bishop of Suzusa and Apostolic Administrator for the Catholics of the
Ethiopian rite in Abyssinia, and will reside in Addis Ababa.
He will he consecrated by Cardinal Tisserant, Dean of the Sacred College and Prefect of the Sacred Congregation of the Oriental Church.
Another Ethiopian priest, Mgr. Jacob Ghcbre Jesus, newly-named titular Bishop of Erythrum and Apostolic Administrator for the Catholics of the Ethiopian rite in Eritrea. will be consecrated at the same time.
Mgr. Cahsay's appointment has been received very favourably by the Emperor of Ethiopia.
The Church in Ethiopia dates from the 4th century. when St. Frumentius was sent by St. Athanasius of Alexandria. He was consecrated first Bishop of Ethiopia by St. Athanasius himself and founded six other dioceses.
During the 6th century the whole of the Ethiopian Church was led into schism by a group of dissident priests from Syria.
Full freedom for the development of the Catholic missions in Ethiopia came with the Italian occupation of the country in 1936. but after the last war all the Italian missionaries were forced to leave the country.
