No Ban on Fascist March
Sir Samuel Hoare, the Home Secretary, has issued a lengthy statement in reply to a deputation from South London headed by Mr. Ben Smith, M.P., urging him to ban the Fascist march to be held on Sunday, October 3, in South London. He claimed that such a ban would be an unnecessary encroachment upon the right available to all of free political demonstration and insisted that adequate police precautions to prevent disorders would be taken.
Famous Yacht Found
After being missing since September 13, the Endeavour I was sighted 260 miles south of Ireland. She went across the Atlantic to act as " trial horse " to Endeavour II and was being towed by the yacht Viva II when the hawser snapped during a storm and since then no news had been heard of Endeavour I, save for a false report that she had been sighted off the Azores. Considerable anxiety had been felt for the safety of the yacht, although this was not the first time that she had broken loose, a similar incident having occurred last May. Her average speed across the Atlantic this time amounted to nearly eight knots.
Labour Leader's Meeting Attacked
Groups of Fascists greeted Mr. C. R. Attlee, Leader of the Opposition, with stink-bombs and fireworks when he came to address a meeting at East Ham Town Hall. He was at first prevented from speaking by jeers and booing, butlater was able to speak, though subject to interruption: There was a great deal of disorder and many people had to be ejected.
Another Royal Visit to Wales
The Duke and Duchess of Kent are, it is announced, to pay a two-day visit to South Wales in October, when the Duke will receive an honorary degree at the University of Wales at Swansea and pay visits to Cardiff and the Treforest Trading Estate, which he will formally open.
Minister of Health's Important Pronouncements
Sir Kingsley Wood, Minister of Health, speaking at Newcastle, has announced that a Government Committee is to be set up to investigate the urgent problem of the recruiting, training and working conditions of nurses, including shorter hours and accommodation. The Committee will include representatives of hospitals, local authorities and the nursing and medical professions.
In another speech, also at Newcastle, Sir Kingsley Wood told delegates of the various Tyneside, Durham and Northumberland local authorities that the proposals for the unification of Tyneside into one large administrative area must be left to the authorities themselves.
