Dominican slams Rahner's 'illusions'

A FRONT-PAGE. artit.lc in L 'Osservatore Romano has criticised Karl Rahner and a coauthor of a book on ecumenism which appeared in 1983.
The article claims the book contains grave errors which foster dangerous illusions because it is inspired by "intemperate ecumenical zeal".
The author of the article is a trench donainican Daniel Ohs, Who teachers at the Angelicum University in Rome. The coauthor of the criticised book is Heinrich Freis, Emeritus Professor of Dogmatic Theology at t' University of Munich.
When the book was published in Germany, Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger said in an interview to the theological review Communio that it was an example of "theological acrobatics".
Rahner, who died last year, was publicly thanked by Pope Pau! VI for his contribution to the Vatican Council. He is trenchantly criticised by Ols, who writes "not only are the proposals in this book unable to allow any real progress of ecumenism but above all they imply and propound a real and profound undermining of Catholic faith and, as such, are absolutely unacceptable".
He explains that the authors' error is to think that Christian Unity can be achieved by acceptance of the fundamental truths of Christianity as expressed by Scripture, in the apostolic symbol and the profession of faith or credo of the first centuries (councils of Nicaea and Constantinople).
