Vincentian priests: a clarification

NAN ARTICLE entitled "Indian police charge Catholic Charismatics" in the May 11 issue one of our reporters stated that police had filed charges against two Vincentian priests in Kerala.
Fr Kevin O'Shea CM, Provincial of the Anglo-Irish province of the Vincentians has sent us the following statement: "While we regret the events that have occurred in Kerala, we wish to clarify that the Vmcentian priests mentioned are a group of diocesan priests in Kerala who recently formed a community using the name `Vincentian' as they work under the patronage of St Vincent de Paul. They have no connection, however, with our worldwide Congregation of the Mission, founded by St Vincent de Paul himself in the 17th century, and bearing the name `Vincentian' in English-speaking countries. hi other languages we are called tazarists' after the house in which we were founded in Paris. It was called St Lazare and is now the site of one of Paris's main rail stations. In Britain we will be remembered as having administered St Mary's College, Strawberry Hill, and Damascus House in Mill Hill, as well as parishes in Sheffield, Lanark, Warrington and Goodmayes."
