HITLER'S DOGMA STILL LIVES

Secret meetings of the resurrected Nazis
By Elisabeth Castonier
IN both Germany and Austria Nazi nuclei have been formed, especially in Styria and Bavaria, where hyper-nationalism and a virulent anti-Semitism were active elements long before the first world war. Later, these two provinces became hotbeds for Hitlerite infestation and paved the way for the conquest of the Reich and for the Anschluss.
They do not appear in a body; they do not yet march about in public.
But some groups wear some sort of similar uniform, a certain type of janker (jacket) with the harmless nation-al leather shorts and white stockings.
Some papers in Styria as well as in Bavaria show a pro-Nazi attitude and the very first symptoms of a miniature Volkischer Brobachrer.
'WHEN speaking to Nazi infected youngsters or girls, as well as to adults, I was reminded of long gone days, when I studied in Munich and Nazism was in its infancy, ridiculed by the intellectuals, worshipped by the disgruntled unemployed and minimised by officials.
Then, here and there, one was suddenly faced with youngsters and girls who were eager to spread the anti-Christian gospel laid down in Mein Kampf. which legalised the persecution, torture and extermination of those who were " racially inferior," who were good Christians and who did not think as the Nazis wished them to think.
Today, some groups of the young generation as well as disgruntled exsoldiers arc once more aboat to form themselves into an organisation which might become a potential danger: they have gone under ground, they are " resistance workers," tbey arc well camouflaged. They arelteeting and one realises how little the democracies have achieved and how easy it would have been at the end of the war, to round up those elements and direct them towards a definite aim.
Now, those who never joined the Nazi party and who helped the Allies are often faced with a refusal when they apply for a job: " If you were deNazified we would take you," which means that ex-Nazis get priority on the quiet.
In some firms Nazis are being put in charge of those so-called decent Germans who did not march with the pagan masses, which means disillusion, unpleasantness and at times unemployment for them.
IN spite of propaganda for
democracy, the fundamental attitude has not been changed and, like their fathers after the first World War, the disillusioned post-war youth and the disgruntled want action and ideals.
Though Hitler is said to be dead, his dogma is still alive, as if that pied piper from Braunau had been converted into a legendary Barbarossa, waiting for his own time, while old and new disciples continue to spread his gospel.
The arguments of these Nazis have a striking similarity to pre-war Hitlerite slogans.
The best and most legitimate reason for demanding rearmament and organisation of all the fighting fit is the Communist danger which the Nazis already fought when they came into power in 1933.
Some complaints, not only of Nazis but also of the best type of Germans, are justified and some show how firmly the teachings of Hitler are rooted.
" Hitler wanted Germany to be strong, but Britain and the American Jews were jealous of our industries, because our goods were of better quality and cheaper. Look what they did to our patents. They just stole them-at the same time they declared they were fighting for freedom, free enterprise and decency. Look at their drunken soldateska, !Meg on the fat of the land. This is true, as far as the Russians are concerned.
"The Fillirer was quite right in eliminating the Jews. They are dangerous. All atom spies are Jews. concentration camps ? We did not know anything about that. but we did have penitential colonies Ike the French. Thi: British themselves invented concentration camps and torture in the Boer War. We want to build up. But first, we have got to fight the Communists. Hitler was right when he said that the Reds were enemy number one and the Jews enemy number two."
THE German nation has always looked for and liked guidance; it has liked to be commandeered. The German's national characteristic was always that strange love for discipline and organisation.
The farcical deNazification. this purgatorial cure, was only a method to encourage the vilest form of hypocrisy: a make-believe that they were "cleansed."
It was an ignorant way of dealing with a spiritual pest. And nothing was given as a substitute, but a word: democracy.
It did not mean anything when towns were laid in ruins, civilians burnt alive by phosporous bombs and the people starved in cavehomes, amidst their gigantic cemeteries. The victors forgot
Churchill's motto : in Victory, Magnanimity.
IT is a well-known fact that masses of unemployed and disgruntled people can easily be steered towards chaos and political adventure.
But they may prove useful if well organised and directed towards a righteous cause, the fight against Communism, to which so many young and middle-aged Germans offered themselves by suggesting the formation of a German foreign legion in fight in Korea.
Volunteers flocked to the foreign Consulates, but were told that they cculd not be accepted, and German newspapers published a notice that it was useless to apply.
What an opportunity has been lost in gaining good fighters and rounding up all those idle, unanchored masses, since the indestructible fighting spirit of the German nation will never be damped.
The Russians had a word for ii when they organised their Eastern Police to keep all idle restive elements busy and, above all, under control.
Why not confront the Russians with a Twentieth Century army of Crusaders under Allied Command ?
