Let Anglicans be united but not absorbed

From Mr Antony Charles Ryan SIR The Pope is considering the Bishop of Ebbsfleet's request, and in a separate exercise. that of the Traditional Anglican Communion, to join the Catholic Church en masse and to stay together (Report, July 11). I feel sympathetic to the requests and for them to retain, if possible, some of their beautiful liturgy. In America the Catholic Archbishop Myers has oversight over Anglican Use parishes. He is working to expand the mandate of the Pastoral Provision to include a big wave of new Anglican converts. If this can be done in America, it can be done here. May British group converts be "united, not absorbed".
It occurs to me that there is an analogy with the Portuguese Latin rite church's relations just before our Reformation with the St Thomas Christians or SyroMalabar rite Church, the native Catholic Church of India. This is not an exact analogy, as the latter is much older than the Anglican Church. The Latin rite Church tried to absorb the St Thomas Christians who have always been in communion with Rome, albeit with their own rite. Many St Thomas Christians resisted and did not join the Latin rite Church until much later. The St Thomas Christians now have their own Syro-Malabar rite, which I have witnessed frequently in India, and its own archbishop or Patriarch and are flourishing mightily.
Yours faithfully, ANTONY CHARLES RYAN By e-mail
