THE time is close at hand for Belgium's famous procession of the Holy Blood in Bruges. This precious relic, brought to Bruges in 1150 after the second crusade. will again bring pilgrims to Belgium this year.
The procession takes place on the first Monday after May 2, and will thus he held this year on May 9.
The procession. which has been held since the 13th century and was reorganised by Pope Clement V in 1303, is held in two parts, religious and historical. It depicts sacred history from the expulsion of Adam and Eve to the Birth of Christ. Then the I.ife of Our Lord —the Nativity. the Presentation, the Flight into Egypt. Jesus teaching His disciples. the triumphal entry into Jersusalem, and finally the Passion.
Then follows the historical part. the bringing of the Holy Blood from the Holy Land to Bruges. Here is seen all the power and riches of the guilds, the trades and the citizens of the 'Middle Ages.
Finally the whole procession is assembled before the Chapel of the Holy Blood and the Town Hall. and the Bishop blesses the multitude.
In the evenings of Saturday. May 7. Sunday 8 and Monday 9. there will he great festivity at Bruges, and churches, the monuments and the canals will be illuminated.
