Pornography attacked

PORNOGRAPHY in the media must be countered by stronger laws, more effective selfregulation by newspapers, and by parents, teachers and the Church, a Vatican document urged this week.
A report from the Pontifical Council for Social Communications said that "pornography and sadistic violence debase sexuality, corrode human relationships, exploit individuals — especially women and young people — undermine marriage and family life, and weaken the moral fibre of society itself". Although not quoting any specific cases or countries, the report singled out the media for particular criticism. It had "tragically succumbed to the temptation of exploiting human weakness".
The root cause of the spread of pornography in society is a "pervasive moral permissiveness", the report concluded.
