ARTHUR JONES. 39, executive editor of the National Catholic Reporter. a non-diocesan weekly paper published in Kansas City, has been named editor by Donald J. Thorman, publisher-president and previous editor.
Mr Jones has been executive editor since he joined the newspaper a year ago. A British-horn American citizen, he worked in London for the Catholic Herald and for Gannett Newspapers. a chain of American dailies.
The Bishops' Conference meeting was particularly concerned with the plight of black South Africans and they have promised a further statement on the migratory labour system. They also promised a joint investigation with the Anglican bishops into the reasons for the lack of black candidates for the priest-hood, and a petition to the Vatican to up-grade the liturgical commemoration of the Uganda Martyrs to the rank of a feast.
