Alsace's Great Catholic Population

The brave fight by Catholic Alsace against the French Government's plan to abolish religion in the schools and make them conform to the rest of France, has attracted the world's attention.
It is not often realised how Catholic this province is.
In the diocese of Strasbourg there are 900,000 Catholics and 1,165 priests. In the university there is a Catholic faculty with 15 professors and 24 priests. Last year 104 priests were ordained. Among the many Catholic organisations there are 39.000 members of the youth movement, 14,000 members of the Catholic Mothers' League and 1,284 active members of the League of St. Vincent de Paul.
It is small wonder that the province is fighting hard to retain its religious rights and liberties.
