Casino In Marino Protests

A joint pastoral letter read last week from every pulpit in San Marino, Europe's oldest and smallest republic lying on the South-West fringe of the Italian province of Emilia. has urged the 16,000 inhabitants to oppose the running of the new State gambling casino opened early this month. A Communist majority now controls San Marino's administration: and a recent law was passed authorising the setting on of a casino to replenish the republic's finances.
The Bishops of Montefeltro and Rimini, who protested last Year to the regents against the scandal of illegal gambling in the Belvedere Hotel on the feastday of the republic's patron saint, have this time called on the faithful to discard " every mirage of indecorous prosperity".
