MEMORIAL TO FR. HUDSON Bishop Griffin Cuts First Turf

On the Feast of the Assumption, Mgr. Griffin cut the first turf preparatory to building operations for the Memorial Church to Father Hudson at Coleshill, Birmingham.
A site has for some time been reserved in front of Father Hudson's Homes, to this end; and the new memorial Church to the intrepid and devoted founder of the Homes is to be dedicated to Our Lady and Si. Theresa of Lisieux.
Day of Anniversaries
The Bishop, addressing those assembled for the ceremony, said that the Feast of the Assumption was a day of anniversaries for Father Hudson's Homes. The Cottage Homes were opened on that day. St. Joan's Home for Girls was opened on the same date.
On that Feast, too, the boys trudged up the hill with their belongings to St. Edward's, leaving St. Paul's to become the Central School.
Foundation Stone to be Laid on October 3
The foundation stone of the new Church will be laid on October 3, the Feast of St. Theresa of Lisieux.
The style is to be Baroque. Over the High Altar will rise a tower, with choir and altar behind it. The nave will seat 500, the side aisles are designed as processional aisles only.
While the Church is to be a Memorial to Father Hudson, a side chapel, dedicated to St. Theresa, will be erected in memory of his devoted assistant, Fr. Bunce.
Mgr. Griffin said that Fr. Hudson spent the best part of his priestly life at Coleshill and that his Homes were still the model for many throughout Great Britain.
Mr. A. T. Flynn, while allowing that it was difficult for anyone to fill the place of Fr. Hudson, congratulated the Homes on the happy and worthy choice which had made Mgr. Griffin Administrator.
