Bishop Helmut Frenz, head of the Lutheran Church in Chile who has won international acclaim for his 'humanitarian work in helping to evacuate thousands of foreign Leftist refugees since last year's military coup, has come under bitter attack from members of his own church.
Campaigning for the bishop's resignation, they alleged he had sent "distorted news" abroad about the current situation in Chile.
A Lutheran "Committee for the Resignation of the Bishop," which has gathered the signatures of 600 Chilean Lutherans, made the accusation in a statement sent to the Rightwing evening newspaper La Segunda, published in Santiago.
