FUNERAL OF MGR. THORMAN

BURIAL AT USHAW COLLEGE Crowds Kneel in Newcastle Streets
The burial of Mgr. Joseph Thorman, Bishop of Hexham and Newcastle, took place at Ushaw College, Co. Durham, on Monday.
Thousands of people from the diocese arrived at St. Mary's Cathedral, Newcastle in the morning to attend the Pontifical Requiem, which was celebrated by Mgr. Downey, Archbishop of Liverpool. Many were turned away as the Cathedral was packed to capacity. The Requiem was attended by five bishops. They were: Mgr. Wulston Pearson, O.S.B. (Bishop of Lancaster), Mgr. Henry Poskitt (Bishop of Leeds), Mgr. Michael McGrath (Bishop of Menevia), Mgr. Thomas Shine (Bishop of Middlesbrough), and Mgr. John McNulty (Bishop of Nottingham). As the bier was borne from the Cathedral the crowd watched the cortege bareheaded, and silently, and many people knelt as a last token of respect to the bishop whom they had known for so many years. Three hundred clergy travelled to Ushaw where the interment took place at the college cemetery. The coffin was laid alongside that of the last Bishop, Mgr. Collins.
