Anti-Pius travesty

From Mr G Bartley
Sir, I am afraid the review of Susan Zuccotti's book on Pope Pius XII, Under His Very Windows , and the book itself, are a disingenuous travesty of the truth about Pius XII. The book has been quite discredited by, for example, the reviewer in the Inside the Vatican magazine who, after a careful, detailed examination of the aspersions against the Pope, concluded:
' Under His Very Windows demonstrates little or no understanding of Pius's mind, motivation and moral character. It is shocking that the author of a book demeaning Pius XII should express outrage at his being considered for beatification without ever bothering to consult the enormous file of sworn depositions on his life available in the archives of the Congregation for the Causes of Saints...
"Instead, Zuccotti has constructed — out of selective evidence and tortuously forced interpretations — a skewed, pasteboard papal figure, a perfectly indifferent bureaucrat, a fictional pope.
"She may break some Vatican windows, but she does not come close to grasping the actual Pius XII who laboured constantly and courageously against the evils of Nazism in an effort to save every possible life."
Yours faithfully, G BARTLEY Bury St Edmunds, Suffolk.
