CAFOD HAS called for an international war crimes tribunal to investigate Indonesia's actions in East Timor.
The Indonesian president Abdurrahman Wahid has created a tribunal for war crimes, but it only permits prosecution for incidents occurring after the independence ballot of August 30. 1999. Cafod, the aid agency of the bishops conference has condemned the Indonesian government's vacillation.
Catherine Sexton, Cafod programme worker for East Timor, said: "It is clear that there is no political will in Jakarta for any serious steps to be taken against those who commit human rights atrocities."
