Pilgrims bound for Compostella

FOLLOWING the 1982 Santiago Holy Year, six members of the Societe de Amis de Si Jacques de Compostella have founded an English branch, the Confraternity of St James,
The Confraternity is looking for more members, whether past or prospective pilgrims, and hopes to encourage interest in the pilgrimage, disseminate information on it and join in any all European efforts to reestablish the Road to Santiago.
The six members who held the first meeting on January 13 all made pilgrmages to Santiago de Compostella last year. One of their number, Jocelyn Rix, an Anglican from Wolverhampton. walked from Canterbury to Santiago, while another walked from Vezelay.
The next meeting will be held at Wren's Restaurant, St James's Church, Piccadilly on March 6 at noon. Anyone wishing to attend should write to Dr Mary Remnant at 15 Fernshaw Road, London SW 10.
The Diocese of Portsmouth's, pilgrimage this year will follow in the footsteps of Bishop Richard Challoner. As a new Bishop in June 1741, Bishop Challoner travelled from Petersfield to Winchester via Arundel, visiting Catholic centres and households on his route.
The pilgrims will leave Petersfield on April 4 and, averaging 17 miles a day, will arrive in Winchester on April 9. stopping for prayers at churches en route and sleeping in village halls.
